Adaptation and validation of Portuguese
version of Tonsil Adenoid Health Status
Instrument (TAHSI)
Original Article
Authors Abstract
Objective: Validation and cross-cultural adaptation of
André Sousa-Machado the Tonsil and Adenoid Health Status Instrument,
Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto, Portugal in Portuguese.
Methods: A prospective study was carried out
Francisco Sousa to evaluate and to compare 51 consecutive
Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto, Portugal patients who underwent tonsillectomy or
Sara Azevedo adenotonsillectomy operation (pre-operative and
Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto, Portugal 6 months post-operative) and 49 asymptomatic
controls.
Ana Silva Results: The Mann-Whitney test showed a
Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto, Portugal statistically significant difference in the mean
score between the patients and the control group
Luís Meireles denoting good clinical validity. The Cronbach’s
Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto, Portugal coefficient value for the EP-TAHSI for 50 cases was
0.946, demonstrating good internal consistency.
The Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed a marked
improvement in the patients’ scores 6 months
post-operatively. Spearman’s rank and Pearson’s
correlations were used to correlate the level of the
resemblance of the mean score of the EP-TAHSI,
which showed statistically significant results.
Conclusions: EP-TAHSI is a valid instrument for
evaluating the subjective effect of tonsillectomy
on the health and quality of life and hence is
recommended to be used in tonsillectomy
research and daily practice. It adds value in the
follow-up after surgery and in legal issues that can
arise in that line.
