INSTRUCTIONS TO THE AUTHORS Revista Portuguesa de Otorrinolaringologia
e Cirurgia Cérvico-Facial publishes original
research, review articles, case reports and
editorials, among others, with a focus
on clinical, scientific, social, political and International guidelines are considered in
economic factors, covering the different
areas of otorhynolaringological knowledge
and coming from different countries, in
order to spread the highest standard of
information and improve medical care.
This publication follows the guidelines of
the biomedical edition of the International
Committee of Medical Journal Editors
(ICMJE), the Committee on Publication
Ethics (COPE) and the EQUATOR Network
Resource Centre Guidance on Good
Research Report.

Articles that include human experimentation

ethics committee and respect for the
Helsinki Declaration of 1975 and its revision
in 1983. Animal experiments should also
provide the appropriate approval by the
local ethics committee.
Authors should classify their articles in
one of the following categories: Original;
Review; Clinical case; Opinion; ORL History.

submitted online to:

The SPORL Journal adopts a single blinded
peer review with no cost associated. The
works submitted must comply with the
instructions to authors provided (including
the conflict of interests, copyright and
authorizations). Each submission is then
reviewed by at least 2 reviewers of the
specialty within 20 days and the final
decision is defined by the Editor-in-Chief.
After this stage, the corresponding author
will be informed of the acceptance of the
work or of any changes required to enter

their publication. The editor reserves the
right to amend or introduce minor changes

The preparation of manuscripts must
comply with the rules set out in the uniform
requirements for manuscripts submitted to
biomedical journals, JAMA 1997; 277:927-

Authors should submit the articles
in electronic form, with numbered
pages, formatted in Microsoft Word (or
left, with wide margins and font size of 12.
The first page, unnumbered, must include:
• The title of the work (maximum 15
words) in Portuguese, French or Spanish
and English
• The authors’ names and degrees
• The authors’ affiliations and their
numerical index
• Name, address, telephone, fax and
e-mail address of the corresponding
author
• Reference to financial support or
scholarships
• Indication of scientific meeting where
the work has previously been shown (if
applicable)
The second page, unnumbered, must
comprise:
• The title of the work
• Summary structured in Portuguese,
French or Spanish and also in
English (maximum 150 words) with the
following sequence: Objectives, Study
Design, Material and Methods, Results and
Conclusions.
• In clinical cases only the case should be
described in abbreviated form
• Key words
• Short title
The manuscript text (maximum 12
numbered pages) should also be divided
into: Introduction, Methods, Results,
Discussion, Conclusions (one paragraph
only), Acknowledgements, References
(maximum 25 citations). Clinical cases are
to be structured as follows: Introduction,
Description(s) of Case(s), Discussion and
References.
References should follow the Vancouver
standards. Up to 4 authors should be listed.
If there are more than 4 cited, the first 4
followed by et al. References should be
numbered consecutively in the order they
are mentioned in the text. References
should be identified in the list of references
by Arabic numerals, and the text of the
parentheses. Articles accepted but not yet
published should be designated (in press
/ in press). The information contained in
manuscripts yet to be accepted must be
registered with (unpublished observations
/ unpublished observations).
The abbreviations of journal titles should
be abbreviated according to the Index
Medicus available on www.nim.nih.gov.

The illustrations, figures or tables and
the respective subtitles, duly numbered
according to the entry in the text should be
inserted into the Word file at the end of the
article after the references. Only images of
graphs or tables in JPEG, Word and Excel
(maximum 10MB per element) will be
accepted with a total maximum of eight
such elements per manuscript.
Failure to comply with these publication
rules and guidelines will lead to the outright
rejection of the article.
